But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law. (Galatians 5:22-23)
So…how many servings have you managed today? Was it apples, bananas, guava, or…other? If you are all psyched up for a lesson on nutritional balance, sorry to disappoint. The ‘fruit’ that we are talking about, though not offering vitamin A or C, is nonetheless far more fulfilling.

Jesus said, “I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest”. (John 4:35)
We left Montgomery for the Atlanta airport at 6am on June 5, 2010, already weary from packing most of the night for our week-long mission trip, yet excited to be on our way south of the equator to winter in Brazil!

Beneficial bitterness
The Scripture is very clear on the issue of bitterness. While the Bible allows righteous anger in specific situations (Eph 4:26), it prohibits ongoing bitterness of heart (Eph 4:31).

As you grow, you reach a point where you either move forward or you remain stagnant and miss your life. You either cower in fear to protect yourself, or you take a leap of faith propelled by courage, and you begin to risk. If you’ve been hurt, you risk having a relationship. If you’ve been so riddled with fear that you have confined yourself to your own little walled universe, you take a risk and get outside those walls you have built to protect yourself. Those walls haven’t protected you; they have infected you. They have infected you with soul rot because you have ceased to really live when you are behind them.

A beginning and an ending,
dates upon a stone
But the moment in the middle
is how we will be known
Cause what defines us can be
found within a line
Finding reason for our time.

the Two”

A growing vacuum of leadership exists in this generation as people hunger for friendship and simultaneously avoid leadership. Observers of the political and governmental scene are asking the question, “Are our best people running for office?” The answer that many people believe, and the opinion of one recent public television special, is no.

Luke 17:33: “If you cling to your life, you will lose it and if you let your life go, you will save it.”
It’s a hot summer day and I’m watching my 9 year old daughter and her friend ride bikes as I walk around the park. Every now and then I lose sight of them as they go between trees and shrubs of all different sizes and shapes, and when I do see them again I notice they are both riding with one arm dangling, the other holding on. It’s a skill they’ve just discovered and perfected in their minds, being able to let go with one hand and still have control.

Why are Christians part of local churches? What is the church? If we have never given thought to what the church is, what it is supposed to be, or why we are a part of it, then it might be easy for us to take it for granted, remake it into our own image according to our desires, or disregard it altogether.

Not long ago I was asked to explain what it means in practical terms to “love my neighbor as myself.” The person asking the question was convinced that this biblical command from Jesus sounded nice but he wasn’t at all sure what it would look like in daily practice.
